The Bandol designation is the flagship red wine designation in Provence and of the Mourvèdre grape variety in France. The vineyard, carved into ths hillsides around the town of Bandol and its surroundings, faces the sea. The vines are arranged in terraces, giving the impression of a vineyard amphitheatre where the vines are in tune with the climate. The mistral wind and the Mediterranean climate join limestone and marl soils to enable the Mourvèdre, late-ripening and difficult grape variety, to reach its potential. If the geology and the climate in Bandol give the Mourvèdre its letters of nobility and great and fine red wines in the South, the Controlled designation of origin (AOC) Bandol also produces red wines with other grape varieties as well as it produces white and rosé Provence wines.

What is the history of the Bandol vineyard?
Often forgotten, Provence is actually France’s first vineyard, with the arrival of the Phoceans who introduced vines near Marseille. As evidenced by amphoras found during archaeological excavations, the history of Bandol wines dates back to six centuries before our era!
Thanks to its proximity to a major trading port, the Bandol vineyard expanded throughout Europe and later the world. Highly appreciated, notably by King Louis XV, Bandol wine was served at the finest tables. Awarded AOC Bandol status since 1941, this vineyard was among the first to receive an appellation d'origine contrôlée.
