DOMAINE ROMAN, A FAMILY STORY

Domaine Roman: A Family Legacy
A History Rooted in Tradition
Located in the commune of Jonquières in the Vaucluse region, the Roman family has been working the land for over 130 years. The family’s story begins in 1885 when Martinien, Arnaud’s great-great-grandfather, took over the management of the Marquis de Causans’ farm. Initially focused on cereal farming and sheep breeding, the estate planted its first vines in 1965 under the guidance of Ginette and André, Arnaud’s grandparents. Driven by Arnaud’s parents, Céline and Jean-Yves, the estate eventually transitioned entirely to viticulture and embraced organic farming practices.
In 2012, their son Arnaud joined the family estate after gaining winemaking experience in France and the New World (Australia and California). Inspired by his international experiences, Arnaud returned to the estate with the ambition to create his own wine. Previously, the harvest had been solely dedicated to cooperative cellars, but Arnaud was determined to unlock the full potential of his vines. The first vintage of Domaine Roman was released in 2015, following the establishment of a winemaking facility in the old sheep barn.
Domaine Roman: An Organic Vineyard in the Rhône Valley
The estate has seen each generation pass down the family land and passion. Arnaud Roman represents the 5th generation, so when asked about his passion for wine, he naturally responds: “Like Obélix, I fell into it when I was little!”
Today, Domaine Roman spans nearly 25 hectares of vineyards within the Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu appellations, with a recently acquired parcel in Vacqueyras (first vintage in 2021). The vineyard is cultivated entirely under organic farming practices, which are more environmentally friendly and help preserve soil biodiversity, crucial for the healthy development of the vines.
Domaine Roman Wines: The South in a Bottle
Benefiting from a Mediterranean climate and the influence of the Mistral wind, Domaine Roman cultivates primarily Rhône and Southern varietals to create distinctly southern cuvées. The estate produces three Côtes du Rhône cuvées: a red, a white, and a rosé, along with a red Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu cuvée.
The Plan de Dieu red cuvée is an elegant and structured blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre, notable for its spicy character. The Côte du Rhône red (Grenache, Syrah, Marselan) is a sun-drenched and voluptuous wine with notes of blackberry and violet. The white cuvée, a blend of Clairette and Grenache Blanc, delights with its roundness and exotic fruit notes. Finally, the rosé, named Cha’ladoc in reference to the Caladoc grape and Tigrou, the family cat, is both fresh and gourmand. According to legend, Tigrou’s infatuation with this rosé nearly led him to fall into the tank!
