SWEET WINES: CONFIDENTIAL APPELLATIONS AND GREAT CLASSICS

The Best Sweet Wines for Your Holiday Celebrations
Whether paired with foie gras or a Christmas log, sweet wines are a must-have for the festive season. While Sauternes and Monbazillac are classics, there are lesser-known sweet wines worth exploring. We’ve traveled through wine regions to uncover hidden gems from our partner winemakers. Alsace, Bordeaux, Languedoc, South-West... discover our selection of sweet wines offering unbeatable quality and price.
1) For Those Who Love Rich, Sugary Wines
"Tradition" by Domaine Laougué – AOC Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh
This wine is described as a “delicate sweet treat.” Originating from the Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh terroir, a lesser-known appellation in the South-West, it offers excellent value with a creamy mouthfeel and flavors of honey, mild spices, and exotic fruits. With its gourmand notes of mango and pineapple, Domaine Laougué’s cuvée is a perfect example of the virtues of this appellation.
Ideal to accompany Christmas foie gras toasts.
"Loupiac-Gaudiet" by Château Loupiac-Gaudiet – AOC Loupiac
Have you heard of Loupiac ? This controlled appellation, located opposite Sauternes and 30 km from Bordeaux, produces fruity, vibrant, and concentrated sweet wines with good aging potential. Perfect for celebrating the holiday season, the “Château Loupiac-Gaudiet” cuvée pairs wonderfully with Roquefort or poultry and is also delightful as an aperitif.
2) For Those Who Enjoy Sweet Wines… but Not Too Sweet
Gewürztraminer Prestige by Domaine Robert Freudenreich et Fils – AOC Alsace Gewürztraminer
When thinking of sweet wines, Alsace might not come to mind immediately. However, if you prefer slightly sweet wines, this cuvée from Domaine Robert Freudenreich et Fils is ideal. Aromatic with rose scents and fresh on the palate, this wine is made from fully ripe grapes, giving it good aging potential.
Perfect with Christmas pastries or Alsatian cheeses like Munster.
Sweet Wine from Domaine Rocher des Dames
Despite its origins in the summer region of Languedoc-Roussillon, this wine is excellent for the end-of-year festivities. Its floral and peach aromas make it unique, while its balance of sugar and acidity makes it ideal for those wary of overly sweet wines. Corinne and Jean-Luc Bernard of Domaine Rocher des Dames recommend it for festive meals, especially with foie gras or chocolate yule log.
3) For Those Seeking Originality
"Vent d’hiver" by Domaine Chiroulet – IGP Côtes de Gascogne
Cheers to wine, cheers to winter wine! If you want to surprise your guests with an unusual wine, Domaine Chiroulet’s cuvée is perfect. This South-Western wine, harvested with the first “winter winds,” features aromas of candied apricot and lemon on the nose, with slightly woody notes on the finish.
Enjoy this wine as an aperitif or with a traditional frozen yule log.
Sweet Bordeaux Wine from Château Le Cossu
Known for its reds, Bordeaux is less renowned for its sweet wines (except Sauternes, of course). However, the “Cérons” cuvée from Château Le Cossu, true to the power and aging potential of Bordeaux’s great wines, showcases dried fruit and honey notes with a full palate and lasting aromatic persistence. Ideal if you want to innovate with festive sweet and savory pairings like pear-Roquefort puffs.
4) For Those Who Only Swear by the Classics
"Cuvée Château Haut Bernasse" by Château Haut Bernasse – AOC Monbazillac
With 11 hectares of white grape varieties on the Monbazillac hills, Château Haut-Bernasse cultivates the three Sauternes grape varieties (muscadelle, sauvignon, and sémillon), known as the “white triad.” This wine’s nose reveals aromas of apricot and candied figs, while its palate shows a fine balance between liqueur and freshness, with a hint of acidity on the finish.
Served as an aperitif, it will delight your guests and start your Christmas meal with a flourish.
"Domaine Lasserre Jurançon Doux" by Domaine Lasserre – AOC Jurançon
The writer Colette compared Jurançon to a prince “fiery, imperious, and treacherous, like all seducers.” This sultry tribute could apply to the “Jurançon Doux” cuvée from Domaine Lasserre, adorned with a golden-yellow robe and an explosive nose of mango, pineapple, and orange. Dense and fruity, its palate reveals subtle lemon notes on the finish.
An ideal wine for your Christmas meals, especially if serving white meat or a dish with Roquefort.
"Château Raymond Lafon" by Château Raymond Lafon – AOC Sauternes
It’s impossible to talk about sweet wines without mentioning Sauternes! While we’ve shown that there are many alternatives to this “star” of sweet wines, we must acknowledge that the crus of this prestigious Bordeaux appellation are worth their weight in gold. We conclude our selection with the Sauternes from Château Raymond Lafon, a “favorite” among our clients. Its nose offers aromas of candied fruits and honey, while its palate shows a perfect balance between sugar and acidity. “A splendor that stands up to the best first-growths, as always in great vintages,” says Terre de Vins.
A great choice to start your Christmas evening as an aperitif, or you can reserve it for dessert.
