Wine and chocolate pear crumble: 2 perfect matches

Perfect Wines to Pair with Pear and Chocolate Crumble
Maybe not everyone’s cup of tea, but when it comes to us, we’re fans—especially of pear and chocolate crumble. So, how does wine fit into this dessert? Here are our suggestions for perfect pairings.
Naturally Sweet Wines: The Ideal Compromise
Pear and chocolate make such a harmonious couple that it’s not always easy to find the right wine to complement them. If the chocolate is dark, a red wine is your best bet. However, don’t overlook the sweet flavor of the pear. Therefore, a naturally sweet red wine is often the best choice. The light tannins will blend perfectly with those of the chocolate, and the low sugar content won’t overpower the pear. Consider wines from the Banyuls, Maury, or Rivesaltes appellations (Languedoc-Roussillon).
Our Suggestion for a Perfect Pairing:
Château Montana - Le Sweet de Montana - AOC Rivesaltes
- Type: Naturally Sweet Red Wine
- Notes: Grenache Noir with a deep color and aromas of red fruits and spices. The palate is indulgent with notes of cherry and blackberry.
- Pairing: Ideal for chocolate desserts.
Liqueur Wines: Yes, but Not Just Any
Another option is sweet white liqueur wines. These are sugary and high in alcohol, making them a great match for the bitter flavor of dark chocolate. However, the crumble’s biscuit and the pear’s flesh can quickly make the combination overly sweet. In this case, we recommend a Coteaux du Layon (Loire) or a Gewurztraminer (Alsace).
Our Suggestion for a Perfect Pairing:
Domaine Robert Freudenreich et Fils - AOC Alsace Gewurztraminer
- Type: Liqueur Wine
- Notes: Gewurztraminer from Alsace with a pale yellow color and brilliant reflections, featuring aromas of candied fruits and lychees. A lovely, mellow wine with fruity notes.
- Pairing: Ideal with foie gras, as well as fruit and chocolate desserts.
Enjoy your dessert and wine pairing!
