HOSPICES DE BEAUNE: 3 ANECDOTES YOU MAY NOT KNOW

3 Things to Know About the World's Largest Wine Auction
1. A Vineyard Over 5 Centuries Old
Every year, the elite of the wine world and wine enthusiasts flock to Burgundy to attend what has become, over the course of 155 years, one of the most important wine events in the world: the Hospices de Beaune. This grand annual auction features wines from the Côtes de Beaune AOC, produced in a 69-hectare vineyard linked to a hospital built in 1443... more than five centuries ago!
2. Founded by the Chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy
The Hospices de Beaune were founded by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to Duke Philippe the Good of Burgundy. During a time of war and famine, he decided to build an establishment to house the impoverished and homeless residents of Beaune. Thus, the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune was born. In addition to its exceptional Gothic architectural style, the establishment included a vineyard from its inception. This was a first in France! The Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune, now the Centre Hospitalier de Beaune, expanded over time thanks to financial support and numerous donations, including vine plants.
3. Hospices de Beaune: Filming Location for "La Grande Vadrouille"
If you are familiar with classic films, you probably remember the famous scene with the nuns in the Salle des Pôvres from the movie "La Grande Vadrouille" (1966), starring Louis de Funès and Bourvil! The filming location for this scene was none other than the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune, where the famous auction has been held annually for over 150 years..
