Portraits of winemakers
Château de Marmorières: A Historic Estate in the Heart of Cru La Clape

A Legacy of Excellence and Passion
Nestled in the heart of the Cru La Clape, between Mediterranean garrigue and the sea, Château de Marmorières is an emblematic estate of the Languedoc, passed down through generations of the de Woillemont family since 1826. More than just a wine estate, it embodies a philosophy of respect for the terroir, with a commitment to preserving the vineyard for future generations.
"Our philosophy is built for the long term—we borrow these vines from our children to leave them with a healthy environment and a legacy of expertise," shares the winemaker.
This deep-rooted commitment translates into sustainable viticulture, diversified crops, and meticulous pairing of grape varieties with their ideal plots.
One of the oldest estates in Cru La Clape, Château de Marmorières has a rich history dating back to the 10th century, when it housed a fortified castle. The chapel, windmill, and dovecote built between the 11th and 13th centuries still stand today as historical landmarks of the estate. Not far away, the Commanderie de Saint Pierre la Garrigue, another property of the family, sits at the foot of the dramatic Clape massif cliffs overlooking the sea.
This organic vineyard is distinguished by its pristine environment, where olive trees, almond groves, and umbrella pines thrive alongside a rich biodiversity of peacocks, bee-eaters, hoopoes, and European rollers.
"On your next visit, keep an eye out for the peacocks that have lived here for centuries. If you’re lucky, you might spot a hoopoe or a European roller nesting nearby."
A true invitation to wonder and discovery, reflecting the winemaker’s deep attachment to the local ecosystem.
A Unique Terroir Producing Wines of Character
The 120-hectare vineyard of Château de Marmorières boasts an exceptional diversity of soils. The clay-limestone terrain, characteristic of La Clape, allows each grape variety to fully express its potential.
"We have carefully adapted each grape variety to its ideal plot. Our goal is to enhance what nature offers us—never forcing the process."
This meticulous approach results in balanced, elegant, and complex wines that truly reflect their terroir.
- The estate’s red wines, made from Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Carignan, showcase aromas of red fruits, spices, and garrigue.
- The white wines, crafted from Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc, and Roussanne, offer a delightful freshness, with notes of white flowers and exotic fruits.
"The wines from Commanderie de Saint Pierre la Garrigue resonate with me the most—they represent the essence of my journey and the style of wine I strive for: complexity, elegance, and freshness."
For generations, the de Woillemont family has worked in harmony with nature, adopting sustainable practices to preserve the ecosystem.
"We observe our vineyards daily and adjust our work according to the needs of the vines and the natural cycles."
This commitment to responsible viticulture includes:
- Enriching the soil with plant-based and animal compost.
- Winter cover cropping with legumes and cruciferous plants to prevent erosion and encourage biodiversity.
- Natural pest control using sexual confusion techniques to reduce pesticide use.
- Eco-friendly treatments with sulfur, copper, and essential oils—only when necessary.
A Philosophy of Excellence and Generational Transmission
Château de Marmorières is, above all, a family story, where each generation contributes its expertise and passion for winemaking. The winemaker, deeply attached to the estate, sets himself a challenge every year: "To do better, or at least as well as the previous vintage."
One particularly unforgettable memory: "I proposed to my wife in November 2011, on a plot of Grenache Noir, the emblematic grape of the Commanderie, with a breathtaking 360° view. I was so overwhelmed, my head was spinning !"
This deep connection to the land means that every vine and every plot tells a story.
A visit to Château de Marmorières is an immersive journey into a world where history, nature, and winemaking intertwine. Visitors can explore the vineyards, observe the local wildlife, and taste exceptional wines crafted with dedication and passion.
"Through our wines, we strive to share the history of our estate, and we are always delighted to welcome visitors who appreciate our heritage."
An invitation to discovery and tasting, in one of the most beautiful terroirs of Cru La Clape !
