IGP Méditerranée: everything you need to know about the wines of this appellation
History of the IGP Méditerranée appellation
The IGP Méditerranée is an appellation that encompasses a vast wine-growing area covering several departments in the south-east of France, including Provence and part of the Rhône Valley. The appellation was created to meet the growing demand for accessible quality wines, while allowing winemakers greater freedom in the choice of grape varieties. Thanks to its sunny climate and generous land, the IGP Méditerranée produces wines that reflect the plural identity of the Mediterranean terroir.
Climate and terroir of the IGP Méditerranée appellation
- Climate: Typically Mediterranean with its hot, dry summers and mild winters, the climate of the IGP Méditerranée is one of the keys to the quality of the wines produced under the IGP Méditerranée. Winds, such as the mistral, also play an important role, keeping the vines healthy by reducing humidity.
- Soils: Soils vary by area, from limestone and clay soils to stony terraces, which allow the vines to benefit from natural drainage and great mineral wealth.
IGP Méditerranée grape varieties
The IGP Méditerranée authorises a wide range of grape varieties, offering winemakers creative flexibility in the production of their wines. Red grape varieties include Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The most common white grape varieties are Vermentino, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Viognier.
IGP Méditerranée wine styles
Red wine: Intense ruby red colour. The nose is dominated by aromas of red and black fruits (cherry, blackberry), accompanied by notes of spices and garrigue. On the palate, IGP Méditerranée red wines are rich, round and have velvety tannins.
Rosé wine: Pale pink color. IGP Méditerranée rosé wines reveal aromas of fresh red fruits (strawberry, raspberry) and floral notes. On the palate, they are fresh, light and balanced.
White wine: White wines have a pale yellow color and a very floral nose, with aromas of white flowers, citrus fruits and sometimes exotic fruits. On the palate, IGP Méditerranée whites are fresh and mineral, often marked by a saline finish.
