In the center-east of France, Burgundy is one of the oldest French wine regions, known for its very great vintages. It includes in particular the AOC Santenay 1er Cru.

The appellation area of this AOC extends in the Côte de Beaune over approximately 330 hectares of mainly marl and limestone soils. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines are planted in this appellation, which produces white and red wines (including 11 Premiers Crus). The red wines are good wines for laying down, round in the mouth and tender, and they express the typical bouquet of Pinot Noir: red fruits, flowers (violet and rose) and liquorice. The white wines are fresh, mineral and full-bodied, with floral and citrus notes.
