In the center-east of France, Burgundy is one of the oldest French wine regions, known for its very great vintages. It includes in particular the AOC La Romanée.

The appellation area of this AOC extends into the Côte de Nuits vineyard (Côte d'Or) on less than one hectare (84 ares and 52 centiares) of clay and limestone soils. Pinot noir vines are planted on this appellation, the smallest appellation in France, which produces only 4,130 bottles of Grand Cru red wine each year. These are balanced, powerful and delicate wines, with aromas of red and black fruits and especially cherry, which have very good aging potential (between 20 and 30 years).
