Cépage : Grape variety : Soreli
Soreli: Origins and Unique Characteristics of This Grape Variety
Soreli, a modern and resilient white grape variety, represents innovation and sustainability in the wine world. Designed to address climate and environmental challenges, this hybrid grape is admired for its robustness against diseases and its unique aromatic potential. Discover the history, key terroirs, aromatic characteristics of Soreli, and follow our tips for perfect food and wine pairings to showcase this exceptional grape variety.
Description and Origins of Soreli
Created in Italy in the 2000s by the San Michele all’Adige Institute, Soreli is a cross between Friulano and disease-resistant varieties. Its name, meaning "little sun" in Friulian, reflects its ability to produce bright and expressive wines even under challenging climatic conditions. Soreli is particularly valued for its natural resistance to downy mildew and powdery mildew, significantly reducing the need for chemical treatments. This early-ripening and vigorous grape variety produces balanced and aromatic dry white wines.
Key Terroirs Where Soreli is Cultivated
Soreli is primarily cultivated in Northern Italy, particularly in the Friuli and Veneto regions, where the temperate climate and varied soils provide ideal conditions for its development. In France, it is gradually being introduced in several vineyards in the South, such as Languedoc-Roussillon and certain IGP regions in the South-West, where its sustainable potential appeals to winemakers seeking environmentally friendly practices.
Aromatic Characteristics of Soreli
Characteristics of Soreli in White Wine:
-
Appearance: Soreli-based white wines feature a pale yellow color with green reflections.
-
Nose: Intense aromas of citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit), white fruits (peach, pear), and white flowers, with a herbal note reminiscent of Sauvignon.
-
Palate: These wines have a lively and fresh attack, balanced by a pleasing roundness. Citrus and white fruit flavors harmonize with a delicately mineral finish.
Best Food Pairings with Soreli
Here are our recommendations for perfect food and wine pairings with a bottle of white wine made from Soreli:

Grilled fish with lemon (AOC Corbières Blanc)
-
