A Rich History of Vine Growing and Pineau des Charentes

Vine-growing has deep roots in the Charentes region, dating back to Roman times. The vineyards were first planted in Saintonge in the 3rd century, and gradually expanded into Aunis, Angoumois, and throughout the Charentes and Charente-Maritime, with the town of Cognac becoming the center of a thriving wine economy. Pineau des Charentes shares this rich history with Cognac, crafted using the same expertise and traditional methods that have been passed down for generations.

Originally a family beverage, enjoyed at weddings and gatherings, Pineau soon gained regional popularity and eventually became recognized nationally in France. By 1920, the industry was organized, and in 1935 it received official recognition as a liqueur wine with a protected designation of origin. The real turning point came on October 12th, 1945, when Pineau des Charentes was granted the status of Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), further boosting its reputation, which has since spread internationally.

While the exact origins of Pineau des Charentes are unclear, legend holds that it was created by accident when a winemaker mistakenly poured grape must into a barrel containing Cognac eau-de-vie. It wasn't until years later that he discovered the clear, sunshine-filled wine, and thus, Pineau des Charentes was born. Today, this unique and flavorful liqueur wine continues to be a symbol of the Charentes region, cherished around the world.
