A Family Legacy and a Passion for Wine
Domaine Gérard Bertrand embodies the excellence and winemaking expertise of Languedoc-Roussillon. Rooted in a four-generation family tradition, the estate traces its origins to the Corbières region, where Georges Bertrand introduced his son Gérard to viticulture from an early age. Following his father's passing in 1987, Gérard Bertrand took over the Domaine de Villemajou and founded his wine company in 1992 to promote wines from the South of France. Today, Gérard Bertrand owns 11 iconic châteaux and estates, including Château l’Hospitalet, Clos d’Ora, Domaine de Cigalus, Château de la Soujeole, Château La Sauvageonne (AOC Terrasses du Larzac), and Château Laville Bertrou. His mission: to showcase the exceptional terroirs of Languedoc and elevate them on the international stage.
A Biodynamic Approach: Respect for Nature and Wine Excellence
Believing that biodynamics is the best way to enhance terroir expression, Gérard Bertrand began converting his vineyards in 2002 at Domaine de Cigalus. Today, all his properties are cultivated using organic and biodynamic farming practices, certified by Demeter. Biodynamic viticulture involves natural methods, such as plant-based preparations, adherence to lunar cycles, and a balanced interaction with the environment. This approach helps preserve biodiversity, strengthen the vines’ natural resistance, and produce wines with outstanding purity and aromatic depth.
An Exceptional Terroir and Prestigious Wines
The estate spans across renowned terroirs with ideal climatic conditions (Terrasses du Larzac, La Clape AOC, Corbières-Boutenac), benefiting from optimal sunshine and refreshing maritime breezes. As the leading organic vineyard region in France, Languedoc-Roussillon enables environmentally friendly viticulture thanks to its clay-limestone soils and Mediterranean climate.
Gérard Bertrand crafts exceptional wines from emblematic grape varieties such as Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Rolle. Among his most iconic cuvées:
- Clos d’Ora, a prestigious wine symbolizing peace, love, and harmony.
- Cigalus Rouge, a biodynamic benchmark with delicate red and black fruit notes.
- L’Hospitalitas, a grand cru from the La Clape massif, featuring a smooth attack with ripe black fruits and violet aromas.
- Clos du Temple, named the best rosé in the world, boasting a rich palate with white fruit, exotic fruit, and green pepper notes.
Innovation and the Mediterranean Art of Living
Innovation lies at the heart of Gérard Bertrand’s philosophy. His wines are designed to offer unique experiences, featuring elegant packaging, such as the Côte des Roses range, distinguished by its sculpted rose-shaped bottle base. Château l’Hospitalet, the crown jewel of the estate, is also a premier destination for wine tourism, nestled in the protected La Clape massif. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, jazz concerts, and a five-star hotel, embodying the Mediterranean Art of Living.
Through his expertise, Gérard Bertrand has become the Ambassador of Grand Wines from Languedoc worldwide. His commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly viticulture has established his estate as a leading reference in French wine, seamlessly blending passion, excellence, and respect for the terroir.
