A Ninth-Generation Family Tradition at Domaine Romaine Bouchard

A Legacy of Wine-Growing Excellence

Domaine Romaine Bouchard traces its origins to Burgundy, where wine-growing has been a family tradition since the 17th century. In 1965, Romaine Bouchard moved from Burgundy to establish his own vineyard and winery. After 40 years of dedication to winemaking, Romaine passed away in 2011, leaving behind a legacy of passion for wine. His son, Emmanuel Bouchard, took over the estate in 1997, bringing a background in biology and continuing the family tradition with a blend of modernity and respect for tradition.

A Terroir Perfectly Suited for Vines

The estate spans 10 hectares, benefiting from a stony, south-east facing slope with deep, fresh clay soils, ideal for nurturing vines. The vineyard’s altitude of 350 to 400 meters adds a distinct acidity, contributing to the fine balance and tannin structure that define the wines of the appellation. The warm Mediterranean climate, moderated by the Mistral wind, allows for optimal ripening of the grapes, primarily Grenache and Syrah, which thrive in these conditions. A portion of the vineyard on the Valréas plain produces lighter, fruitier wines.

Organic Practices and Personal Growing Methods

At Domaine Romaine Bouchard, three key principles guide vineyard management:

  1. Encourage the vines’ natural defenses
  2. Allow the grapes to fully mature
  3. Activate the biological life in the soil

Certified organic by Ecocert, the estate uses no synthetic products. Instead, it nourishes the soil with organic matter, including vegetable compost, to support the ecosystem and ensure sustainable production.

Vinification for Finesse and Complexity

In the winery, the focus is on producing wines that reflect the true character of the grapes. Grenache brings depth and fruitiness, while Syrah contributes complexity and structure. The blending process is essential for achieving the desired finesse, combining the best qualities of both varieties to create wines of exceptional quality.
