In December 2014, Domaine du Silène became part of the Domaines Paul Mas family. Nestled along the Joncastre stream and neighboring Château Paul Mas, this estate enjoys a unique location that combines a Mediterranean climate with the cooling influence of northern winds, sheltered by surrounding pine forests and garrigue.
The acquisition by Jean-Claude Mas fulfills the dream of his grandfather, Raymond Mas, adding to the prestige of Domaines Paul Mas while diversifying production. This site benefits from optimal climate conditions and reflects the family's longstanding commitment to excellence across generations.
Domaine du Silène symbolizes a harmonious blend of Italian expertise and the terroirs of southern France. This collaboration began in 1992 when Jean-Claude Mas partnered with his mentor, renowned oenologist Giorgio Grai, and culminated in the acquisition of the estate in 2014—realizing the ambition of Jean-Claude's grandfather.
Close to Château Paul Mas and the Cistercian abbey of Valmagne, the estate offers breathtaking views of the Hérault Valley, the Mediterranean, the Cévennes, the Montagne Noire, and the Pyrenees. Surrounded by truffle oaks and an olive grove, Domaine du Silène is a luxurious rural setting, protected by pine forests and garrigue.
The name "Silène" was inspired by the discovery of a rock resembling the face of Silenus, the tutor of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, reflecting the estate's deep-rooted connection to viticulture.
Covering 52 hectares, including 24 hectares of vineyards within the Languedoc – Grés de Montpellier appellation, Domaine du Silène boasts an exceptional terroir for cultivating Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan, and Syrah. Managed organically and biodynamically since 1995, the estate enjoys an ideal environment, where the Mediterranean climate and northern winds create perfect conditions for viticulture. It also serves as a sanctuary for kestrels and common buzzards, highlighting the rich biodiversity of the land.
