Ten Centuries of History at Domaine du Mioula

The history of Domaine du Mioula dates back to the 11th century when Conques monks first discovered this fertile land in the heart of the Marcillac Valley, beneath the expansive sky and alongside a river lined with poplar trees. Initially, they named it "Mieula", which evolved over time into "Mioula", meaning "middle" in the local dialect — a nod to its central location, at the heart of the vines.

A Unique Terroir and Grape Variety

The Mansois (or Fer Servadou) grape variety, known for its exceptional adaptation to the valley's climate, has thrived on these lands for centuries. By the 12th century, hebdomadaries from the Cathedral of Rodez had settled in Mioula, cultivating this iconic grape. Over the centuries, the estate passed from the hands of devoted monks to skilled wine-growers, each continuing the legacy of the land.

Resilience Through History

In the early 20th century, when phylloxera devastated vineyards across the region, Domaine du Mioula was one of the rare estates to preserve its original Mansois vines without resorting to grafting — a remarkable feat that continues to define the estate to this day. This enduring history reflects the deep connection between the land, the grape, and the people who have tended it for over a millennium.
