Château Tourril: A Legacy of the Kandler Family and a Unique Terroir
Over 30 years ago, the Kandler family, of Franco-German origin, established themselves in the Languedoc, a wine region that was still underrated at the time. They chose the land of Roubia, situated between the Cité de Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi, to found Château Tourril. The estate takes its name from the "Pierre du Tourril," an ancient Gallo-Roman tower that has overlooked the garrigue for over 2000 years.
Sustainable Practices and Leadership of Stéphane Kandler
In 2014, Stéphane Kandler, the heir of the second generation, took over the estate after a distinguished career in sailing, including participation in the America's Cup. Under his leadership, the estate transitioned to organic farming in 2017, focusing on producing wines that are clean, pure, and fully reflective of the terroir.
A Rewarded Organic Vineyard
The Château Tourril vineyard spans 16 hectares and benefits from clay-limestone soils and a south-western exposure, ideal for the cultivation of local grape varieties: Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Carignan for reds and rosés, and Roussanne and Rolle for whites. The estate practices manual harvesting, and vinification is done naturally using indigenous yeasts. Some cuvées are aged in oak barrels, resulting in authentic wines that express the true character of the Minervois terroir.
