The History and Legacy of Château du Glana and Its Vineyard
Château du Glana, built in 1870, is located along the renowned Bordeaux wine route, between the villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, directly opposite the prestigious Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. The estate has its roots in the division of Château Saint-Pierre, a Fourth Growth in the 1855 Classification. In 1961, Gabriel Meffre, a renowned nurseryman from Vaucluse, acquired Château du Glana. He expanded the vineyard significantly, increasing its size from 5 to 43 hectares through the acquisition of parcels from Château Lagrange, a Third Growth in Saint-Julien.
Modern Management and the Ambition of Château du Glana
Today, Château du Glana is managed by Jean-Paul Meffre and his grandsons, Ludovic and Julien, who continue the ambitious task of maximizing the estate's untapped potential. After a complete overhaul of the vineyard and a strategic rethinking, Château du Glana produces modern wines that combine elegance, authenticity, and a deep respect for the exceptional terroir.
In 2003, a full restoration of the estate’s buildings, including the winery, barrel cellar, and offices, reinforced this approach. Under the guidance of Professor Denis Dubourdieu, the estate began producing wines that are balanced, velvety, and complex—enjoyable in their youth but with the ability to age for over ten years. Today, the Château du Glana vineyard spans 59 hectares in a single block, within the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation, known for its Grand Cru Classé estates.
