Château du Fresne: A Proud Winemaking Tradition in the Heart of Anjou
Château du Fresne was established in 1982 through the partnership of two winemaking families from Faye d'Anjou: the Robin and Bretault families. Today, the estate is managed by the third generation—Yannis Bretault, David Maugin, and Olivier Bretault—who oversee the property located in the heart of Anjou, overlooking the Layon River. These passionate, forward-thinking winemakers are dedicated to maintaining the legacy and techniques that have shaped Château du Fresne while continuously improving their methods and equipment to craft exceptional wines. The Château, built in 1436, stands as a historical symbol of the estate.
Vineyard Soils
The vineyards of Château du Fresne are primarily located in Faye d'Anjou, where the vines thrive in shallow, schist-gravel soils composed of square stones and quartz. These soils produce wines with a distinctive character. On the left bank of the Layon, near Champ, the soil is more permeable, made up of sand and gravel, yielding wines with a lighter profile.
Grape Varieties and Certification
Spanning over 80 hectares, Château du Fresne cultivates eight grape varieties, with the primary ones being Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon—three of the most renowned grape varieties in Anjou.
The estate is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (level 3) and follows sustainable practices, ensuring that the land and environment are respected and preserved. As Independent Vignerons, the Bretault family handles every aspect of winemaking, from harvesting to bottling, labeling, and tasting, ensuring a hands-on approach at each stage of production.
