History and Renovation of Château de L'Hospital
Château de L'Hospital, located north of Portets, was designed between 1787 and 1789 by the neoclassical architect Victor Louis, well-known for his creation of the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux. Originally, the estate served as a countryside residence to escape the urban epidemics. It changed hands several times, belonging to various Bordeaux parliamentary families, before Jeanne Cambon became its owner in 1742, following the death of her father. Married to Jacques de l’Hospital, a royal advisor, the estate expanded, and its vineyard was established. After several ownership changes, the estate fell into disrepair. It wasn’t until 2012, when the Battistella family acquired the château, that a major renovation began. Respecting the historical essence of the place, this renovation lasted seven years, allowing the château to regain its former glory. Today, classified as a historical monument, the estate stands as a testament to the past while adapting to contemporary challenges.
The Vineyard and Environmental Commitment
In 2012, the Battistella family decided to renew the vineyard by uprooting nearly thirty hectares of vines to cleanse the soil, before replanting three years later. This decision aligns with their commitment to environmental preservation and marks a new direction for the estate. In 2017, Château de L'Hospital became the first estate in the Graves appellation to be certified Organic Agriculture by Ecocert. Nestled by the Garonne River on gravelly soils, the estate produces a wide range of wines, including whites, rosés, and reds, from single-variety wines to blends of four different grape varieties.
