Domaine de la Forteresse de Berrye in Saumur: A Hidden Gem of the Loire Valley
Nestled in the Saumur appellation, the Domaine de la Forteresse de Berrye is located in a remarkable terroir still relatively undiscovered but with immense potential. Situated on the Turonian hillsides of the village of Berrie, this estate covers 12 hectares of vineyards surrounding the historic fortress. The diversity and quality of its limestone soils, which include tuffeau, allow the production of several prestigious Loire Valley appellations, such as Saumur Rouge, Saumur Blanc, Crémant de Loire, and Coteaux de Saumur.
The estate is committed to respecting the environment and enhancing the quality of its wines. It has started its conversion to organic farming and is set to be certified soon. The Domaine de la Forteresse de Berrye is also involved in agroforestry, beekeeping, and eco-grazing.
Vinification at Domaine de la Forteresse de Berrye
The winery’s vinification and aging take place in the troglodyte cellar within the fortress itself, offering unique conditions for the wines to mature. The estate welcomes wine lovers for tasting tours, available by reservation, where visitors can explore the impressive historical monument.
At Domaine de la Forteresse de Berrye, you can find wines of character, ready to be enjoyed now or kept for aging. The estate’s white wines, produced from the iconic Chenin Blanc grape, are the flagship of the domaine. The red wines, crafted from Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, are expressive and fruity.
